I will have the unique opportunity to look at the starts in two completely different areas in Maine while on vacation. The first area is the Baxter State Park area and the other is in Acadia.
They are completely
different from each other in many respects and the biggest on is how the are
different on the Bortle scale. The Bortle
scale is defined as “The Bortle scale is a nine-level scale that measures
the brightness of the night sky and the interference from light
pollution. It's used to assess the darkness of a location for stargazing
and to compare different sites”.
The Baxter
State Park area has a Bortle scale rating of Class 1 where Acadia has a Bortle
Class rating of 3.
I most
likely will not be able to see the Milky Way Galaxy in Acadia, but it should be
obvious in Baxter.
If you want to look at a light pollution map this is a good resource Light Pollution World Map
These will be the moon phases for when I am in Baxter State Park. I will be in Baxter 27th - 29th of September.
