Lets talk about versatility

Can you use a claw hammer as a bottle opener? Can you use a butter knife as a flat head screw driver? Can you use a sledge hammer to set a finish nail? The answer is yes but there are better tools for each job.

Like today the wind speed was 18 – 30 miles per hour and for me its not logical to try to fly fish. This is one of the biggest reasons I use and egg beater. I enjoy using soft plastic swim baits or twister tail like grubs. The lake had small 1 foot rollers in it and they did not have any chop where I was.

I set out onto the south shores of Lake Erie and did some jetty small-mouth fishing. I met someone who was putting a clinic catching marble eyes. The lake had small 1 foot rollers in it and they did not have any chop where I was.

The rod for me that's the most versatile from small stripers in Maine, Steelhead in the Great Lakes, and mud-sharks in New York is my tried and true St. Croix Avid series “AS90MHF2”. My old Spirex 4000FD has seen plenty of action. Shes past her prime, but she is still hanging in their. I have spooled it up with 30 pound power-pro. I have put a 18” of 20# leader material followed with 8#-12# floro.

The swim baits I use range from the 3.65” Reaction Innovations Little Dipper – White Trash to the Good ole Berkeley Power-bait 3” Power Grub – Milky Shad. The weight of my jig head is dependent on the depth of water along with the volume of current I am fishing.

I arrived at the jetty at 0515 aka first light on Lake Erie. The action was sustained from about 0545 to 0700 when I think the fish choose to move away from the jetty and out of my casting range. All 19 of the small-mouth that came to hand today was on the white trash soft plastic swim bait with a ½ oz bullet head jig with 4/0 hook. All these smallies hit this bait so hard that they were all hooked right through the nostril!

It was amazing to swing swim baits and not have to be be in a river to do it this was because of the southerly wind. I used the countdown method. What I did was count 20 seconds and sometimes 30 seconds. All the fish I hooked up with came out of 16 to 22 FOW (feet of water). I had a new friend show up and was looking for its own meal “I believe it was a heron”.

Well enjoy the photos folks!

A WORD OF CAUTION:

IF YOU DECIDE TO GO OUT ON THESE JETTYS USE EXTREME CAUTION BECAUSE YOU CAN SEVERLY INJURE YOUR SELF AND OR POTENTIALLY DROWN!
